Since their conception in 2005, The Hackens Boys have grown from a camp fire jam session to an award winning Shenandoah Valley favorite. Founding members, Josh Eye (former lead vocals/rhythm guitar), and Jeremy Swecker (former lead guitarist), coined the band name from a place in Highland County, Virginia where their family roots and traditions run deep. After being joined by Tyler Thomas (drums), and the musically versatile Lin Holsinger (former bass guitarist), this ambitious group began to build their dream of making music from the ground up.
In 2009 Jeremy turned the lead guitar role over to Bart Morris, a life-long friend of Lin's. With the addition of Morris, the group started working on original material that would eventually become their first album. In 2010, the band released their self-titled debut album which featured personal themes of family, friends, and the love of music. The album generated much local success, and even led to a fellow southern rock band covering the bands’ song “Roll The Dice” for a southern rock compilation album.
The band’s first experience as a 5-piece came with the addition of the talented Brandon Williams (lead guitar) from fellow local band “Brace For Impact” in 2011. Shortly after, Bart passed his role over to the accomplished Casey Armstrong (lead guitar) From fellow local band/s Midnight Train and Crazy Chester in 2012. This year marked the release of the bands next original work, the southern rock stomper, “Outlaw Rhythm”. This single features a much heavier sound, as well as harmony guitar parts.
With founding vocalist Josh Eye’s announcement of his departure, the group turned to the up and coming, and very talented singer, Josh Heizer, in 2014. With this addition, came the urge to write and record another album. Many hours, days, and months were put into the writing process between the group’s heavy schedule as a cover band, but finally they had done it. In the spring of 2015, The Boys’ released their 3rd original work “On The Run.” A seven song EP featuring the southern edge of Texas country, and the soaring chorus lines of modern country. 2015 also marked the creation of The Hackens Boys Pandora station on Pandora radio.
2016 marked the departure of lead singer Josh Heizer who ended up hand picking his successor, the up and coming singer-songwriter, Ben Kunkle. A Talented vocalist and frontman, dedicated to bringing the energy to the stage, every night.
in 2017, The band added Dobro/Steel/Vocals ace Daniel Barnett from the fellow local band “The Travelin Hillbillies”. His stylings brought a much needed flavor to the bands evolving sound. Singer/guitarist turned Bassist, Captain Jake Stover from the fellow local band “Slumberjack” was added to the band in 2017 as well, adding his stellar stage presence and signature haberdashery.
2018 already looks to be a big year for HB. With the addition of new frontman Spencer Wenger, and a fresh stockpile of original material, This band is ready to take their journey to the next level.
